This morning I went to Westminster Abbey for their service of Matins at 10am. We wanted to be able to see the church without spending the money to be a tourist, and it was amazing to be able to see what the cathedral is really used for, church. We were the first few to arrive and were seated in the choir section, in the very center of the cathedral. Yup, we got the pretty fabulous center seats that are basically your own personal compartment. The famous Choir of Westminster sat right in front of us. I really enjoyed the Sermon which was about finding sanctuary. The reverend included a lot of history of The Abbey, the British Monarchy, and London places of worship within his Sermon and it was actually very informative. I hope to go back again before I head home in 41 days.
Random Happy
Yesterday when I was getting off at Stockwell tube on my way to work I passed a little shop inside the station that I’d never took notice of before. Immediately I had an internal argument with myself about whether or not I should stop and get something a little better for breakfast than the 2 girl scout cookies I’d eaten earlier. I walked past it but then decided I’d be better off trying to be a little healthy for once, so I turned round and headed back. While looking in the display case the man behind the register asked “Would you like a tea or coffee m’am?” I instinctively said no and was annoyed that this guy was trying to talk to me when I just wanted to look at the prices.
I decided on a sausage roll that was only £1 and asked for it. ”Would you like it warmed up a little more? They’ve been sitting out for a few minutes now so it might be a bit cold.” said the man. ”No that’s fine.” I replied, still annoyed that he was trying to be talkative. I avoid being social before 10am as much as I can and this man was totally breaking the London stone cold trend of commuters not speaking, let alone making eye contact to one another in the morning. I wasn’t used to it, especially when, in an cheery voice he asked “Well Alright then, how’s your morning going?” and added “Looks like a dreary day out there, hope it will brighten up for ya.”
For the first time I looked up at this person who was speaking to me and he did genuinely seem to be interested in how my day was going. I told him it was good so far, and that I was glad I stopped in his shop because I was pretty hungrey. He smiled and offered me my breakfast as I handed him the coin. ”Well I do hope you have a good day.” he said, and as I walked away I replied “Same to you.”
Although it wasn’t the longest of encounters this one minute of my morning really stuck out to me the rest of the day. It’s moments like that when I have a little bit more faith in the human spirit. Usually anyone saying “How are you?” or “Good morning” is merely saying it because it’s what they’re supposed to say. They don’t really care. I know when I worked at Old Navy I’d always say “Have a great day!” when I didn’t really give a damn what the person did the rest of the day. Of course it’s not that we wish bad onto others, it’s just that we’re so wrapped up in our own business to take a moment to be genuine towards everyone else. This random person completely made my day and as I walked down South Lambeth Road with a smile on my face I was really grateful I’d decided on stopping in his shop. It’s genuine people like that who really make a difference in the world, however cony that sounds. Being genuine might not end wars and fix nations, but it can at least make a difference in someone else’s day.

Nutella cupcakes. ‘nuff said.
